Etymology: < phyto- comb. form + -saur comb. form, after either scientific Latin Phytosauria, suborder name (1896 or earlier) or scientific Latin Phytosaurus, genus name ( G. F. Jaeger Ueber die fossilen Reptilien Württemberg (1828) 22), so called on account of the supposition at the time that the animals were herbivorous.

A crocodile-like reptile of the Late Triassic suborder Phytosauria.Formerly used only of the genus Phytosaurus.
