Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Spanish. Or (ii) a borrowing from a Cariban language. Etymon: Spanish piache.

Etymology: < Spanish piache (1538) or its Cariban etymon (compare Tamanac peiace (in Italian orthography), Pemon piasan , Akawaio piaiʔchaŋ and piai n.).Peter Martyr of Angleria (compare quot. 1555) was an Italian writing in Latin about the voyages of Columbus for the Spanish Crown. The form piace may therefore reflect an Italian or post-classical Latin attempt to render the pronunciation of the South American word; compare Spanish piache.

Among Central and South American Indians: a medicine man, healer, or shaman. Cf. piai n.
