Origin: Formed within English, by conversion. Etymon: piaffe v.
Etymology: < piaffe v. Compare French piaffe vanity, ostentation, ostentatious (1574 in Middle French; 1567 in phrase faire la piaffe act ostentatiously), apparently also in sense ‘proud gait’ (1771: see below). Compare earlier piaffer n.1771 T. Deletanville New French Dict. (at cited word) Piaffe..a proud gait.
Horse Riding.
A movement in which a horse lifts its feet in a slow, elevated trot, without making forward progress: see piaffe v.In quot. 1899 in extended use.

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French piaffer.
Etymology: < Middle French, French piaffer to act ostentatiously (1578, obsolete in this sense), (of a horse) to lift its legs alternately (1677; compare sense 2), of uncertain origin, perhaps imitative. With sense 2 compare earlier piaffer n. and also piaffer v.
1. intransitive. To strut ostentatiously, parade. rare (archaic in later use).
