pianoforten.2

Brit. /pɪˌanəʊˈfɔːti/, /pɪˌanəʊˈfɔːteɪ/, U.S. /piˈænəˌfɔrdi/
Forms:

α. 1700s– pianoforte.

β. regional and nonstandard 1700s– pianny-forty, 1800s pianner forty, 1800s piany forte, 1800s piany forty, 1800s– pianny-fort.

Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: French pianoforte; Italian pianoforte.
Etymology: < French pianoforte or its etymon Italian pianoforte (although both of these are apparently first attested later: both 1771; compare French †piano et forte (1766), piano piano n.2) shortened < †piano e forte (in gravecembalo col piano e forte harpsichord with soft and loud (1711); < gravecembalo (see gravicembalo n.) + col with the + piano piano adv. + e and + forte forte adj.). The instrument was so called on account of the gradation of tone which it enables the performer to produce, as contrasted with the unvarying tone of the ordinary harpsichord; compare earlier pianoforte n.1 Compare later fortepiano n., piano n.2With the β. forms compare the regional and nonstandard forms at piano n.2 N.E.D.(1906) gives the pronunciation as (piˌæ:noˌfǭ·ɹte, (piˌæ:noˌfǭ·ɹt) /pɪˌænəʊˈfɔːteɪ/ /pɪˌænəʊˈfɔːt/; the latter, however, seems already to have been rare by this time.
= piano n.2 1a. Now formal and somewhat archaic.Sometimes with defining word indicating size, shape, etc., as grand, square, upright, cottage pianoforte, etc.: see the first element.
