Etymology: < classical Latin piātiōn-, piātiō act of expiation < piāt- , past participial stem of piāre to appease ( < pius pious, dutiful: see pious adj.) + -iō -ion suffix1. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (pəiˌēi·ʃən) /paɪˈeɪʃən/.
