Etymology: < photo- comb. form + polarimeter n. In sense 1 after French photopolarimètre (A. Cornu 1883, in Compte rendu de l'assoc. française pour l'avancement des sci. 1882 253).
1. Science. An apparatus for measuring the proportion of polarized light in a beam.
