A ceremony performed thirty-one days after the birth of a firstborn male child in which the child, nominally the property of the priesthood, is redeemed from this claim through payment of a sum of five shekels or its equivalent to the officiating priest; = redemption n. 1b.The ceremony is based upon Exodus 13:2–16 and Numbers 18:15, and is not required if either parent is a Cohen or a Levite. If the thirty-first day is a sabbath or holiday, the ceremony is postponed to the following day.
