Etymology: < German Phototonus (J. von Sachs Lehrbuch der Botanik (ed. 3, 1873) 783) < photo- photo- comb. form + classical Latin tonus tension (see tonus n.).
Biology. Now rare or disused.
A state of mobility or responsiveness induced or maintained in a plant, plant organ, or a cell by exposure to light.
