Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French piceastre.
Etymology: < French †piceastre (1611 in Cotgrave glossed as ‘the wild Pitch tree’) < †picéa a spruce (1553 in Middle French; now épicéa (1811)) or its etymon classical Latin picea a spruce, use as noun of feminine of piceus pitchy (see piceous adj.) + French -astre -aster suffix.
rare. Now historical.
A kind of coniferous tree, perhaps Norway spruce, Picea abies.
