Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin piceus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin piceus made of pitch, pitchy, like pitch ( < pic- , pix pitch n.1 + -eus : see -eous suffix) + -ous suffix. Compare Portuguese piceo (1561 in sense 1, 1664 in sense 2), Italian piceo (1550 in sense 1; 19th cent. in sense 2). N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (pi·siˌəs) /ˈpɪsiːəs/.
