Forms: 1800s pichey, 1800s pichiy, 1800s– pichy, 1900s– pichi.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Latin pichiy; Spanish pichi.
Etymology: < scientific Latin pichiy, specific epithet of Loricatus pichiy (A. G. Desmarest 1804, Tabl. Méth. Historical. Nat., in Nouveau dict. d'hist. nat. XXIV. 28) or its etymon South American Spanish pichi < Mapuche pichi small.
A small armadillo, Zaedyus pichiy, which resembles the yellow armadillo ( Euphractus sexcinctus) but with a mainly dark carapace, and occurs in the pampas of Argentina and Chile.
