Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: pigment n., -ation suffix.
Etymology: < pigment n. + -ation suffix (compare post-classical Latin pigmentatus painted (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian) < classical Latin pigmentum paint (see pigment n.) + -ātus -ate suffix2). Compare French pigmentation (1863 or earlier).
Chiefly Biology and Medicine.
Coloration or discoloration resulting from the formation or deposition of pigment in the tissues; (gen.) the presence of pigment, coloration by pigment.
