Origin: A borrowing from Maori. Etymon: Maori piripiri.
Etymology: < Maori piripiri. With sense 1 compare later biddy-biddy n.In form piri-jiri originally a misprint by A. Cunningham in Ann. Nat. Hist.(1839) 3 30, an error repeated in some dictionaries. N.E.D.(1907) gives the pronunciation as (pīə·riˌpīə·ri) /ˈpɪərɪˈpɪərɪ/.

1. Any of several perennial trailing and creeping plants of the genus Acaena (family Rosaceae), with pinnate leaves and fruits in the form of burs; esp. A. anserinifolia of Australia and New Zealand. More fully piripiri bur. Cf. biddy-biddy n.
