Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: English pirnie cap.
Etymology: Shortened < pirnie cap (see below) < pirnie adj. + cap n.11824 Edinb. Mag. & Literary Misc. May 532 Mistaking the honest man's pirnie -cap for a bonnet rouge, persuaded himself that Jacobinism was actually triumphant within the walls of the Burgh.
Scottish. Now rare.
A conical woollen nightcap, usually striped.
