Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin pisana, pisanum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pisana, also pisanum (1303, 1345 in British sources), uses as noun of respectively the feminine singular and the neuter singular of classical Latin Pīsānus Pisan n. and adj. Compare Middle French gorgerette pisainne (1365), post-classical Latin basinettum Pisanum (1343 in a British source).

A mail collar forming part of a cape extending over the shoulders and upper part of the breast; such a cape itself.
