Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Phragmites.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Phragmites, genus name (M. Adanson Familles des Plantes (1763) II. 34; used earlier as specific epithet (Arundo Phragmites ) by Linnaeus in Species Plantarum (1753) 81) < classical Latin phragmītēs a kind of reed (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek ϕραγμίτης growing in hedges (Dioscorides, designating a reed) < ancient Greek ϕράγμα fence, screen (see phragma n.) + -ίτης -ite suffix1. Compare French phragmite (1818).
A cosmopolitan genus of reeds, the members of which have strong, erect stems, flat, linear leaves, and a plumose panicle of flowers; (also in form phragmites) a reed of this genus, esp. the common reed, Phragmites australis.
