Etymology: < classical Latin piscīna fishpond, bathing pool, tank, in post-classical Latin also font (4th cent.), basin for draining water used in the Mass (13th cent. in British and continental sources) < piscis fish (see Pisces n. and adj.) + -īna -ine suffix4. Compare Old Occitan piscina (c1300), Catalan piscina (15th cent.), Spanish piscina (13th cent.), Portuguese piscina (15th cent.), Italian piscina (13th cent.).
