单词 phryganea
释义

Phryganean.

Brit. /frᵻˈɡeɪnɪə/, U.S. /frəˈɡeɪniə/
Inflections: Plural Phryganeae.
Forms:

α. 1600s phryganion, 1700s phryganium.

β. 1700s–1800s Phrygania, 1700s– Phryganea.

Also with lower-case initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin phryganeum, Phryganea.
Etymology: In α. forms < post-classical Latin phryganeum, phryganium (see below); in β. forms < scientific Latin Phryganea (also as Phrygania ), genus name (1710 or earlier), alteration of post-classical Latin phryganeum , phryganium caddis (1668 or earlier as phryganeum ) < either ancient Greek ϕρύγανον or medieval Greek ϕρυγανίς a dry stick (both < ϕρύγειν to roast, parch < the same Indo-European base as fry v.1), so called on account of the stick-like appearance of the larval cases. Compare French phrygane caddis (attributed to P. Belon, 1552 in Middle French).Compare classical Latin phrȳganion article used as a medicinal amulet, which Pliny ( Nat. Hist. 30. 103) used to render Hellenistic Greek ϕρυγάνιον ( < ϕρύγανον + -ιον , diminutive suffix) in Chrysippus and mistook for the name of an unidentified animal. Compare the following:1634 P. Holland tr. Pliny Hist. World i. xxx. xi. 391 What liuing creature he [Chrysippus] would meane by that same Phryganium, neither hath he himselfe described, nor euer could I meet with any man that knew it. In the post-classical Latin form phryganeum perhaps representing use as noun of an unattested adjective in -eus (compare -eous suffix.)
Zoology.
