Etymology: < Hindi phuknī < phuknā to be blown, (of a fire) to be kindled by blowing ( < phūknā to blow, blow into, to kindle (a fire), ultimately < Sanskrit phūt- to blow, blow into, of imitative origin) + -ī, suffix forming nouns.The β. forms reflect an association of the aspirated initial stop of the etymon with the English phoneme /p/ (which is typically pronounced with a degree of aspiration).
