Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek ϕυλακτός, καρπός.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ϕυλακτός capable of being preserved ( < ancient Greek ϕυλακ- , stem of ϕυλάσσειν to guard (see phylactery n.) + -τός , suffix forming verbal adjectives), though used in active sense, ‘capable of guarding or protecting’ + καρπός fruit (see carpo- comb. form2; compare -carp comb. form).
Zoology.
A receptacle in certain hydrozoans protecting the gonothecae.
