Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ϕύλλον , -idium comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕύλλον leaf (see phyllo- comb. form) + -idium comb. form. With sense (a) perhaps compare slightly earlier phyllidiobranchiate adj. With sense (b) compare later phyllid n.
Zoology and Botany.
Any of various small leaf-like structures in animals or plants; spec. (a) each of the lamellar folds of the mantle that act as gills in certain opisthobranch gastropods lacking ctenidia; (b) a plant part homologous to or resembling a leaf, esp. a phyllid; (c) an appendage of the scolex in certain tapeworms (rare).
