Etymology: < post-classical Latin phyllodium (A. P. de Candolle Théorie élémentaire de la bot. (1813) 333) < Hellenistic Greek ϕυλλώδης leaf-like, having petalled flowers ( < ancient Greek ϕύλλον leaf (see phyllo- comb. form) + -ώδης -ode comb. form1) + post-classical Latin -ium (see -y suffix4).

1840 Penny Cycl. XVIII. 127/2 Phyllodium is that organ which in the greater part of the New Holland Acacias, or wattle-trees, stands in the place of leaves.
1853 A. Gray Bot. Text-bk. (ed. 4) 172 In these cases the proper blade of the leaf is commonly abortive or disappears; this substitute, called a Phyllodium (meaning a leaf-like body), taking its place. These phyllodia constitute the whole foliage of the numerous Australian Acacias.
1885 G. L. Goodale in A. Gray & G. L. Goodale Bot. Text-bk. (ed. 6) II. ii. x. 347 All the eight species of this genus [sc. Sarracenia] have hollowed phyllodia, which form slender pitchers or urns.
