Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Phyllophaga , -an suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Phyllophaga (see note below; < phyllo- phyllo- comb. form + -phaga , neuter plural of -phagus : see -phagous comb. form) + -an suffix.As applied to edentate mammals, Phyllophaga was introduced by R. Owen ( Descr. Skel. Extinct Gigantic Sloth (1842) 167) and revived as a suborder by M. C. McKenna & S. K. Bell Classif. Mammals above Species Level (1997). As the name of a group of beetles it has been attributed to W. S. Kirby (a1839); as the name (singular) of a genus of scarabaeid beetle it had been proposed by T. W. Harris in 1826 but not validly published until 1842.

An animal belonging to any of various taxonomic groups called Phyllophaga and characterized as feeding on leaves, spec.: (a) a group of edentate mammals, comprising the extant and fossil sloths; (b) a group of marsupials, including the phalangers, flying phalangers, and koalas (obsolete); (c) a group of scarabaeoid beetles, including the chafers (obsolete); (d) a group of hymenopteran insects comprising the sawflies (obsolete).

1842 W. T. Brande Dict. Sci., Lit. & Art 926/1 Phyllophagans, Phyllophaga, the name of a tribe of Marsupials, including the Phalangers, Petaurists, and Koala; also of a tribe of beetles, including those which live by suction of the tender parts of vegetables, as the leaves and succulent sprouts.

2001 Molecular Phylogenetics & Evol. 18 94 The phylogeny of these groups [sc. edentates] is poorly resolved. This is particularly true for the sloths (phyllophagans), originally a large and diverse group now reduced to two genera in two different families.
