Origin: Probably of multiple origins. A borrowing from Turkish. Probably also partly a borrowing from French. Probably also partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Turkish pilav; French pilaf; Italian pilaf.
Etymology: < Turkish pilav < Persian pilāv (see pilau n.). Probably partly via French pilaf (1833), Italian pilaf. Compare modern Greek πιλάϕι, Russian pilav.Pilaf seems now to be more usual in North America than pilau and is the usual entry form in North American dictionaries (there exists also the American regional form perlow n.); in other English-speaking areas their incidence seems to be about equal.
