Etymology: < scientific Latin Pilea, genus name (J. Lindley Collectanea Botanica (1821) 4) < classical Latin pīleus pileus n.
A large pantropical genus of the family Urticaceae, comprising small annual or perennial herbaceous plants, some of which are grown as house plants for their ornamental foliage; (also pilea) any plant of this genus.
