Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin pilus , -eous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin pilus hair (see pilus n.) + -eous suffix, after osseous adj., carneous adj., etc. Compare earlier pilous adj.With pileous system (see quot. 1893) compare French système pileux (X. Bichat Anat. gén. (1801) 792).
Medicine. rare.
Of, relating to, or consisting of hair.
