Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin pilus , -iferous comb. form.
Etymology: < classical Latin pilus hair (see pilo- comb. form) + -iferous comb. form. Compare post-classical Latin piliferus (see quot. 1698 at main sense, where use of the feminine as a noun is apparently implied), French pilifère giving rise to hairs (1743), bearing hairs (1821).
Botany, Zoology, and (formerly) Anatomy. Bearing or having hair or a hair; covered with hair.
