Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish pitahaya.
Etymology: < Spanish pitahaya, pitajaya (a1550) < Taino pitahaya. J. Corominas Diccionario crítico etimológico castellano e hispánico(1981) at pita cites Peter Martyr of Angleria (a1519) for pitahaya as the name of a plant (i.e. presumably representing the Taino word in a post-classical Latin text).
Any of several tall cacti bearing edible fruits, native to the south-western United States and Mexico; esp. the saguaro, Carnegiea gigantea. Also: the fruit of any of these cacti.
