Etymology: < pledge v. + -er suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin plegiarius (1339 in a British source), Anglo-Norman pleger and Middle French (rare) plegeur sponsor, guarantor (late 12th cent. in Old French as plegeour; French †pleigeur).
1. A person who drinks in response to, or to the health of, another. Also figurative. Cf. pledge v. 4. Obsolete.
