Etymology: < pleio- comb. form + -tropy comb. form, after German pleiotrop (see pleiotropic adj.). Compare German Pleiotropie (1945 or earlier in a work title). Compare slightly earlier pleiotropism n.
Genetics.
The production by a single gene of two or more apparently unrelated phenotypic effects; an instance of this.
