Origin: Probably a borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish plena.
Etymology: Probably < American Spanish (Puerto Rico) plena (although this is apparently first attested later (1960 or earlier: see note)), perhaps < plena , feminine of pleno full, total < classical Latin plēnus (see pleni- comb. form and compare plain adj.1). Compare Spanish a plena voz, literally ‘with full voice’ (1881 or earlier).This style of singing and dancing is believed to have originated at the beginning of the 20th cent.
U.S.
In Puerto Rican culture: a traditional style of singing and dancing showing African influences and characterized by a highly syncopated rhythm and often satirical lyrics, the rhythm of the vocal lines frequently contrasting with that of the accompaniment; (also) the music associated with this style.
