Etymology: < Irish puilliliú, puillilliú, fuililiú, etc. (interjection and noun) a hunting cry, clamour, also (now rare) shout of distress, of imitative origin. Compare ululu n., whillaloo n.Forms in f- and ph- may reflect the Irish vocative, which is formed by mutating initial p- to ph-, pronounced /f/.
Chiefly Irish English. Now rare.
