Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; originally modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Greek πίνειν , -o- connective, -cyte comb. form, -osis suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πίνειν to drink (see pincern n.) + -o- connective + -cyte comb. form + -osis suffix. In quot. 1895 at main sense after French pinocytose (G. Gabritschewsky 1894, in Ann. de l'Inst. Pasteur 8 682); subsequently re-formed in English (see quot. 1931 at main sense). Compare earlier phagocytosis n.
Biology.
A process by which droplets of liquid are taken into a cell, now known to be by means of small vesicles formed by the pinching off of an invagination of the cell membrane; an instance of this.

For this action the term pinocytosis is suggested.
