单词 pinot
释义

Pinotn.

Brit. /ˈpiːnəʊ/, U.S. /ˈpinoʊ/
Forms: also with lower-case initial.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Pinot.
Etymology: < French Pinot kind of vine (1611 in Cotgrave; late 14th cent. in Middle French as pynos (plural), denoting the grapes), spec. a kind of Burgundian vine (1870) < pin pine n.2 + -ot -ot suffix, so called on account of the grape cluster resembling a pine cone. Perhaps compare (with different suffix) post-classical Latin pignolus kind of vine (1303 in a north Italian source). Compare earlier Pineau n. (and the etymological note at that entry). The suggestion proposed in quot. 1854 at sense 1 is a learned folk etymology.
1. Any of several varieties of grapevine, associated particularly with the Burgundy region of France; the grape of these vines. Also: wine made from these grapes.
