Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pilot n., bird n.
Etymology: < pilot n. + bird n.; in sense 1 so called because the birds accompany ships at sea; in sense 2 apparently so called because the bird accompanies the superb lyrebird, feeding on organisms which it unearths (compare quots. 1893 at sense 2 and 1984 at sense 2, although compare also quot. 1903 at sense 2).
