Used attributively and in the genitive with reference to an oil-gas obtained from shale oil or similar fractions of petroleum which was formerly widely used for lighting railway carriages, lighthouses, buoys, etc. ΚΠ 1874 Appletons' Jrnl. 17 Oct. 511/1 The Pintsch gas-lamps, which have recently stood a satisfactory trial upon one of the English railways. 1882 Encycl.
