Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Franco-Provençal. Etymons: French piolet; Franco-Provençal piolet.
Etymology: < French piolet or its etymon Franco-Provençal (Val d'Aosta, Savoy) piolet, (Valais) pyolë, lit. ‘small axe’, apparently < Italian regional (Piedmont) piòla axe (compare Franco-Provençal (Val d'Aosta, Savoy) pioula , (Valais) pyöla , Old Occitan piola (14th cent.; Occitan piòla ), post-classical Latin piola plane, scraper, also a kind of sword (Du Cange, citing undated Italian texts); further etymology uncertain and disputed) + Franco-Provençal -et , diminutive suffix (compare -et suffix1). Compare Italian regional (Piedmont) piolét.
