Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pilotis.
Etymology: < French pilotis (14th cent. in Middle French) < pilot (14th cent.; < pile pile n.1 + -ot -ot suffix) + -is, suffix forming collective nouns (of uncertain origin).It is uncertain whether singular forms with final -y, -i show a naturalization of the ending of the French word, or an inferred singular from plural forms in -is.
Building and Architecture.
Usually in plural. Any of a series of columns or piles, typically used to raise a building or part of a building above ground level.
