Etymology: < German Pilsenit (G. A. Kenngott Mohs'sche Mineralsystem (1853) 121) < the name of Deutsch-Pilsen , former name of Nagybörzsöny, Hungary, where the mineral was first found + -it -ite suffix¹.

Mineralogy.

A silvery to steel-grey mineral that is an alloy of bismuth and tellurium, Bi₄Te₃, occurring as foliated masses and belonging to the trigonal crystal system.Originally identified with wehrlite, but later regarded as one component (along with hessite) of the mixture that wehrlite was found to be.
