Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: pious adj., -ity suffix.
Etymology: < pious adj. + -ity suffix (see -osity suffix), after piety n. (compare quot. 1883). Compare earlier piousness n.Compare French pieuseté (1938 or earlier; attested earlier in Middle French as pieusetez (15th cent. in an apparently isolated attestation of uncertain meaning)).
Affected or excessive piousness; sanctimoniousness; (also) an instance of this.
