释义

pistoln.

Brit. /ˈpɪstl/, U.S. /ˈpɪstl/
Forms: 1500s pystoll, 1500s–1600s pistall, 1500s–1600s pistoll, 1500s–1600s pistolle, 1500s–1700s pistole, 1500s– pistol, 1600s pistal, 1600s pistle; English regional (north-western) (in sense 4a) 1800s pistil, 1900s– pistle; Scottish pre-1700 peissteill, pre-1700 pestole, pre-1700 pestoll, pre-1700 pestull, pre-1700 pistell, pre-1700 pistoll, pre-1700 pistul, pre-1700 1700s– pistol.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pistole.
Etymology: < French †pistole (1544), probably < early modern German regional (Silesia) pisschulle , pischol , pischczal , bitschol , etc. (1421 as pisschulle ; compare German Pistole (a1607)) < Czech píšt'ala , píščala , spec. use of píst'ala whistle, pipe, flute (apparently first applied during the Hussite wars to a weapon with a barrel and a clear-sounding shot; in modern Czech the word was reborrowed from French or German as pistole ). Compare Italian pistola (1574), Catalan pistola (1640), Spanish pistola (1598; perhaps via French). Compare earlier pistolet n.1For an argument in support of an older etymology of the French word < Italian pistolese pistolese n. see C. Blair Pistols of the World(1968) 4–6.
