Etymology: < German Pistomesit ( A. Breithaupt 1847 , in Ann. der Physik u. Chemie 70 146) < ancient Greek πιστός trustworthy, genuine ( < the same Indo-European base as πίστις faith (see pisteology n.) + the Indo-European base of -τός , suffix forming adjectives from verbs) + μέσον middle (see meson n.²) + German -it -ite suffix¹, after Mesitin mesitine n., so called on account of its having been analysed as having the chemical consistency previously thought to be that of mesitine or mesitite, i.e. the exact intermediate between magnesite and siderite (compare quot. 1868).Breithaupt simultaneously coined a scientific Latin binomial term Carbonites pistomesites, which, however, gained no currency.
