Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; originally modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Greek βέλος , -oid suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek βέλος arrow, dart (see belomancy n.) + -oid suffix, originally (in medical use) after post-classical Latin beloides (1749 or earlier). With the zoological use compare scientific Latin Beloidea , group name (Haeckel, in the work cited in quot. 1887).
Having a narrow, pointed, or tapering shape, or composed of parts having such a shape; spec. (a) Anatomy †designating a styloid process (obsolete. rare); (b) Zoology (in radiolarians) designating a form of skeleton composed of disconnected spicules; (c) Anthropology designating or exhibiting a shape of skull with a broad occiput and narrow frontal region.
