Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: pine v., -ed suffix1.
Etymology: < pine v. + -ed suffix1.It is unclear whether the Old English form gepinod (one isolated attestation: see quot. OE) is to be derived from a prefixed or an unprefixed verb, i.e. pīnian or gepīnian (see pine v.).
Now English regional (northern and north midlands) and rare.
That has undergone pain, suffering, or punishment; tormented. Also: wasted or exhausted by suffering, hunger, or old age.
