Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek πίναξ , -enchyma comb. form.
Etymology: < πιν- (in ancient Greek πίναξ pinax n.) + -enchyma comb. form, after parenchyma n. Compare earlier pinenchymatous adj. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (pine·ŋkimă) /pɪˈnɛŋkɪmə/.
Botany. Obsolete. rare.
Plant tissue consisting of long thin cells; tabular parenchyma.

1849 J. H. Balfour Man. Bot. 5 When compressed, prismatical cells form the muriform..tissue of the medullary rays of woody stems, and when much shortened they assume a tabular form, constituting Pinenchyma (πιναξ, a table), tabular cells..or square cells.
1895 I. K. Funk et al. Standard Dict. Eng. Lang. II. Pinenchyma, a tissue consisting of long thin cells and occurring in the epidermis of ferns and some other plants.
