Abbreviated BZ.A typical reaction of this type is the oxidation of malonic acid by acidic bromate, catalysed by a cerium salt. In this reaction, cerium( iv) ions are reduced by malonic acid to cerium( iii) ions, which are then oxidized back to cerium( iv) ions by bromate ions.
