Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese pinga.
Etymology: < Portuguese pinga (1813 in this sense), specific use of pinga small amount of liquid, drop, gulp (1593) < pingar to drip, dribble, to flow (although this is apparently attested later in this sense: 1720; earlier in sense ‘to execute’ (15th cent.)) < an unattested post-classical Latin verb *pendicāre (see penchant n.).
In Brazil: raw white rum distilled from sugar cane. Cf. cachaça n.
