Etymology: < post-classical Latin pinguicula ( C. Gesner Descriptio Montis Fractiin De raris et admirandis herbis(1555) 64), use as noun (short for planta pinguicula ) of feminine of classical Latin pinguiculus rather fat ( < pinguis fat (see pinguid adj.) + -culus -cule suffix), apparently after early modern German smalzchrawt , literally ‘dripping weed, fat weed’, so named on account of its greasy leaves (1479; German regional Schmalzkraut ; compare German Fettkraut ). Compare French grassette (1556; < gras fat (see grease n.) + -ette -ette suffix). Compare butterwort n.
Botany.
A genus comprising the butterworts (family Lentibulariaceae), which are small insectivorous bog plants with a slender flower stalk arising from a rosette of thick yellowish-green greasy leaves; (also pinguicula) a plant of this genus, a butterwort.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 17.
