单词 pinguin
释义

pinguinn.

Brit. /ˈpɪŋɡwɪn/, U.S. /ˈpɪŋɡwᵻn/, Caribbean English /ˈpɪŋɡwɪn/
Forms: 1600s– penguin, 1600s– pinguin, 1700s–1800s pinquin, 1900s– penquin, 1900s– pingouin. See also pingwing n.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by compounding. Perhaps a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: pin n.1, whin n.1; Spanish piña, guin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < pin n.1 + whin n.1, with velarization of the nasal to assimilate with the glide, or perhaps ultimately < Spanish piña pineapple (1519 in this sense; < classical Latin pīnea pine cone: see pine n.2) + American Spanish guin, denoting a type of reed ( < Carib; now güín). Compare American Spanish piñuela pinguin (1597 or earlier; apparently < Spanish piña).In form penguin apparently after penguin n. Adopted as a scientific Latin specific epithet by Linnaeus in his Species Plantarum (1753) I. 285.
Caribbean.
Any of several tall, spiny-leaved, tropical American bromeliads of the genus Bromelia; esp. B. pinguin, used for hedging in the Caribbean; (also) the edible fruit of this plant. Also called pingwing, wild pine.It is not clear that Dampier's penguin (quot. 1697) was a bromeliad.
