Etymology: < Maori pipi (1815 as pippee in T. Kendall New Zealanders' First Bk. 11, glossed ‘cockle’).
1. New Zealand. An edible marine bivalve mollusc of New Zealand, Paphies australis (family Mesodesmatidae), found in silty and gritty sand. Also: any of several other edible bivalves, esp. the New Zealand cockle, Austrovenus (or Chione) stutchburyi (family Veneridae), of intertidal mud and sand flats.

More fully pipi pod. The astringent pod of the tropical American plant Caesalpinia paipai (family Caesalpiniaceae ( Leguminosae)), sometimes used for tanning or making ink. Cf. Divi-divi n.
